HDFC vs Axis home loan
HDFC and Axis open at the same typical home loan rate (8.5%), so fees, reset terms and service decide it. On fees, HDFC is cheaper: ₹ 25,000 against ₹ 50,000 at Axis on ₹ 50 Lakhs. Rate bands checked against both lenders' public cards on 10 Oct 2026.

HDFC or Axis home loan: which is better?
Same starting rate, same typical rate, very different ceilings. Both begin at 8%, but HDFC's band runs to 13.45% while Axis stops at 9.1%. If your credit score is anything less than strong, Axis is the safer quote to get.
Timing cuts the other way. HDFC's card already includes October's repo hike. Axis's did not when we checked, and Axis resets once a quarter, so its rates should rise by about 0.25% in late December. On a like-for-like basis HDFC is slightly cheaper today for a strong profile.
Then fees. Axis charges 1% with a ₹10,000 minimum. HDFC charges up to 0.5% with a ₹4,000 minimum. On ₹50 lakh that is up to ₹25,000 at HDFC against ₹50,000 at Axis.
Pick HDFC if
- your profile is strong enough to get close to the floor
- the fee matters: HDFC's ceiling is half of Axis's
- you want a fixed-rate opening period (TruFixed)
Pick Axis if
- your score is average, where Axis's lower ceiling protects you
- Axis offers a fee waiver that closes the gap

HDFC: Policy repo 5.50% + 2.50% to 7.95%, salaried and self-employed. Axis: Salaried and self-employed: repo + 2.75% to 3.85% by CIBIL score. Fees are before 18% GST and come from each lender's fee page, checked 11 Oct 2026; HDFC charges up to 0.5% or ₹4,000, whichever is higher (salaried); Axis charges 1% or ₹10,000, whichever is higher. Where a lender publishes only a ceiling ("up to"), the calculator opens with no fee on either side; enter the ones on your quotes.
After the October 2026 repo hike
RBI raised the repo rate from 5.25% to 5.50% on 7 October 2026. HDFC's card already carries the 0.25% rise; Axis's still did not on 10 Oct 2026, so today's gap flatters Axis. If it passes on the full hike, its typical rate becomes about 8.75% and HDFC is cheaper by 0.25 points. Floating loans already running at either lender reset on the lender's own schedule, so existing borrowers feel it a few weeks apart.
Complaints record

Bigger lenders log more because they have more customers, so read the trend, not the raw count. HDFC leaves out complaints redressed within one working day, and duplicates. Axis leaves out complaints redressed within one working day. Read the trend and the ombudsman share rather than ranking banks on the raw count. Axis: recurring themes
- Complaint: Disbursal delays after sanction, and little communication while borrowers wait. (LiveLaw (Chandigarh commission), ConsumerComplaints.in)
- Complaint: Disputes over pre-EMI and broken-period interest charged before the first full EMI. (Jagoinvestor forum, Voxya)
Themes are listed only when two independent sources (court rulings, news or complaint forums) agree; treat them as things to check, not a verdict. For HDFC we found no loan theme that met that bar.
What to ask before you sign
- HDFC: your spread over repo, since its band is wide
- Axis: whether your quote already includes the October hike
Then put both written quotes, with their fees, into the calculator at the top of this page, and try a prepayment on the home loan EMI calculator to see how the gap changes if you pay early.
More on each lender: the HDFC EMI calculator and the Axis EMI calculator, each with its full rate card by loan type. Every lender's home loan rate and fee is on the home loan interest rates page.
